About Splats
Splats was established in 1993 by Stephen Richards and Mike Redwood. Steve had recently finished his teacher training in Physical Education. In his final year Steve learnt to juggle during his holidays and realized that it would be an excellent teaching tool. He went on to teach it to the entire school during his final teaching practice and study how it could work as an alternative to more traditional sports. This the became Steve’s dissertation and found that juggling and other circus skills worked as a way of introducing pupils to sport who previously hadn’t achieved success. It built up confidence and coordination levels thus providing a platform for success into other sports.
joining forces with Mike Redwood who was training as an actor and director Steve and Mike soon began to develop the entertainment part of the business and used circus to put on shows with pupils. they found that by using a physical circus skill pupils would very happily get up on stage and perform often to the amazement of teachers and parents.
Steve then went on to study as an actor and director also having caught the performing bug and soon went on to direct Wind in the Willows at the Bloomsbury theatre London to much acclaim. this lead to the development of Splats Create a show days where the pupils in just one day perform their very own show. these have since developed into the wide range of shows produced and performed across the UK and include the Jungle Book, Treasure Island amongst many others.
Since 2011 Mike has been working with James Mayhew the writer of Katie’s Picture Show and produced and directed a wonderful production of Katie and the Mona Lisa at the Fairfield Hall Croydon in 2013 and soon to tour the UK. Steve has developed his own story called the Bungaroo has Landed which is a show which develops children’s self expression, confidence and looks at what they want to achieve and enjoy in their life and is often used in Health and PSHE days.
Currently Mike is developing and producing the Chronicles of Splats which is a series of shows and books about a touring circus family through the ages. With titles such as Splatafeld entertains the Vikings and Saxons they are proving extremely popular and are providing and excellent resource and showcase for schools History projects.
Philosophy
Splats days are all about learning through fun. Using circus, drama, magic and film pupils learn to work as a team, boost their confidence and physical skills but have such fun doing this the skills and knowledge they develop is incredible effective. our aims are to enable pupils to acquire the knowledge that learning new skills is and enjoyable process and to learn to understand that mistakes such as dropping a ball are an inevitable and vital part of this process.
Splats days also provide an opportunity for all pupils to shine.

Circus Skills The benefits of Splats Circus Skills days
I first learn to juggle in 1991 and was at the time training as a PE teacher. I soon realised what a great teaching tool it was and went on to complete my dissertation on how it could be a way of increasing participation and skill level in all sports. I have found it to be a INCREDIBLY effective way of boosting pupils confidence, co-ordination, focus and learning skills.
Splats are now the experts in circus teaching and training with materials and resources that focus not just on circus skills but on the learning skills they develop.
In an age where there is so much concern of sedentary lifestyles, Splats circus skills days are the perfect positive solution. It draws on pupils love of challenges. What’s the next trick?
