How a Make a Play works

Assembly

A Make a Play day begins with an assembly to introduce the pupils and teachers to the play and the characters they will be playing. This gives our teacher/narrator the opportunity to explain the story and also the tasks ahead for the pupils and the teachers.

Learning the scenes

The play is split into 4 scenes so the classes need to be in 4 groups. Class size needs to be a maximum of 35 (please let us know if you need more) If you have very small groups it may be worth considering joining them together so they make 2 groups and learn two scenes each- a challenge but double the fun for them. If you only have 3 groups again one class can do two scenes. Usually you will find that you can fit in the Assembly and three lessons in the morning and one more lesson and the show in the afternoon. These lessons can be from 45 minutes to an hour and allow about 30 minutes for the show. The lessons are very well choreographed and planned so it is possible to learn the scene in that time.

Making the set and props

After the assembly our teacher will work with the first group on the first scene. The other three groups go back to the classroom with their class teacher and start making the props and scenery as described in our teaching pack which you will receive on booking. These are very simple and not compulsory. These do require paper, card, scissors, string and glue which we do not supply. They then come to the hall to work with our teacher at the allotted time.

The Show

At the end of the day all the classes come together to perform the show. The splats teacher acts as narrator which helps to guide the play along and of course acts as a cue for the pupils. Our main tip for the class teachers is to enjoy the process as although it sometimes seems an impossible task for our teacher to make the show happen it always works brilliantly and any slight mistakes or changes that happen can be taken in our stride and actually often add to the fun! We very much recommend inviting parents and any classes not taking part to watch the show as of course it works best with an audience!

DO WE NEED TO DO ANY PREPARATION BEFORE THE DAY?

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the Splats workshop which took place at our school today. The children had a wonderful time and we have already received many compliments from the parents who came to watch the performance at the end of the day. Please pass on our especial thanks to Adam, who worked so hard with the children. He is a great ambassador for your company and he really impressed all the staff at our school with the way he engaged the pupils and managed to bring out the best in all of them. The credit for the show goes to him.

    Dear Mike
Just a quick email on behalf of the whole school to thank Mark and your company for a fantastic day last Wednesday at Burnham Market Primary School. Mark led the school in a performance of the Wind in the Willows and the children got so much out of the day, as well as the staff. I took a club in the library the following lunch time and some of the children were choosing books and then performing the story with freeze frames!
We would love to welcome you back again for the next academic year.
Thanks again to Mark. He is a real credit to your company.
    Best regards

Just wanted to say that the children had a really great time practising and performing the Ancient Greek olympics show recently. Alex was great pulling it all together with great enthusiasm, humour and patience. The teachers all enjoyed the day too and the audience thought it was a great treat!

Hello! The Jungle Book day yesterday was a great success. The comments from staff, parents and children today were very complimentary and we really felt we had worked hard and achieved a great deal.

Mark was quite an inspiration for the children and staff. The acting and classroom activities were more 'meaty' than the other two projects I had experienced from Splats at a previous school and consequently I think the day provided more challenge and demanded more pace and concentration from the school as well as providing the usual Splats excitement. The scenes seemed to have very distinct themes so each group felt they were tackling something different to everyone else but they still flowed so the story had one shape if that makes any sense. It wasn't 4 separate chunks when performed. The templates were bold and clear and the extra sheets at the front of the pack explaining the construction were extremely helpful. Mark's direction was very professional and his handling of the children was pitched just right. He listened to them all the time, picking up and building on their best ideas and their strengths which is superb when you think there were 17 twitchy little five year olds involved in the groupings. He didn't comment negatively on nor squash any of their naive or unrealistic ideas. I felt we were working with a real professional and his 'presence' meant that the children's natural instinct was to do anything he said.

This was money very well spent for us - parents make such a big deal when their children do anything like this and far more turned out than we imagined. Thank you very much indeed we will certainly be back. Very definitely one of the highlights of our year.
So much hard work must have gone into the project pack - all the staff appreciated that fact and commented on it because we understand the time and effort that takes. Mark definitely did it justice. Since I first booked a 'Splats' I have noticed a number of other companies offering similar sounding projects but having investigated them they are not quite what they seem AND (at the risk of you raising prices) they are more costly. Pale imitations in my opinion and I tell other Heads that too!

    Have a good Easter.

    Best wishes

    Hi Steve,
Just a quick email to feedback on the two circus days we had last week. I'd like to offer my thanks to both Gareth and Grevil who were fantastic. They were very enthusiastic & engaged the children, in particular I thought the assembly was brilliant. The workshops were excellent too, I had positive feedback from every teacher who took their class to one. I only wish we had booked them for longer as they went so quickly!
Thanks for everything & next time we have a sports week I'll be sure to be in touch again.
    Regards,
    Paul

THANK YOU SO MUCH for a fantastic day!! The children gained so much from the experience while having so much fun at the same time! It waswonderfull to see the childrens’ confidence grow as they took on the various roles. I think we may have discovered some budding thespians! Everyone who watched the show had a brilliant time too. Nick was excellent, holding it all together and inspiring the children with his enthusiasm. I hope he had as much fun as we did!

    Thanks again
